Limited sulfur degassing and muted environmental impact of Ontong Java Plateau lavas

چکیده
The mainly deep-submarine Ontong Java Plateau (OJP) is the result of largest outpouring lava in geologic record. Volcanic events this magnitude can have dramatic environmental impacts due to volatile emissions. We report new S measurements naturally glassy, olivine-hosted melt inclusions and pillow basalt glasses from OJP. combined these data with previous OJP quantify degassing a suite glasses. Comparison an model suggests lavas that erupted at depths ~>1500 m did not degas S; ~<1500 degassed up ~40% initial S, but likely made small fraction lavas. This despite its large volume compared continental igneous provinces (LIPs), emitted less potentially contributing muted impact. may provide framework for temporal evolution oceanic LIPs, early eruptions great water releasing limited no later shallow larger, still amounts S. also implications LIP magmas, which release significant CO2 during intrusive activity, magmatic emissions only becoming important extrusive phases.

Multiple-ScS probing of the Ontong-Java Plateau
We use multiple-ScS phases recorded at Pohnpei from a 1996 deep earthquake under the Solomon Islands to investigate the shear velocity and attenuation characteristics of the upper mantle under the Ontong-Java Plateau in the Western Equatorial Pacific. Cross-correlation results indicate a vertical one-way travel-time under the plateau 3 s slow with respect to PREM, in agreement with previously o...

Ž . The deep structure of the Ontong–Java Plateau OJP in the westcentral Pacific is investigated through a 2-year deployment of four PASSCAL seismic stations used in a passive tomographic experiment. Single-path inversions of 230 Rayleigh waveforms from 140 earthquakes mainly located in the Solomon Trench confirm the presence of an extremely Ž . thick crust, with an average depth to the Mohorov...
متن کاملCretaceous Planktonic Foraminifers and Depositional Environments from the Ontong Java Plateau with Emphasis on Sites
Cretaceous planktonic foraminifers from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 130 consist of two age groups: one dominantly Aptian in age and the other dominantly Maastrichtian. The oldest dated sediments from Ontong Java Plateau occur at ODP Site 807 and are assigned to the early Aptian Globigerinelloides blowi Zone. The assemblage correlates closely with Aptian foraminifers from Deep Sea Drilling ...
متن کاملDeep-sea carbonates: dissolution and mass wasting on ontong-java plateau.
Seismic reflection profiles and the structure of sediments in box cores from Ontong-Java Plateau indicate large-scale land sliding and sediment flow processes, respectively. The topographic morphology of sliding and slumping is depth- dependent, suggesting control by dissolution processes.
متن کاملRapid formation of ontong java plateau by aptian mantle plume volcanism.
The timing of flood basalt volcanism associated with formation of the Ontong Java Plateau (OJP) is estimated from paleomagnetic and paleontologic data. Much of OJP formed rapidly in less than 3 million years during the early Aptian, at the beginning of the Cretaceous Normal Polarity Superchron. Crustal emplacement rates are inferred to have been several times those of the Deccan Traps. These es...
